Frail - Brilliant Darkness [demo] (2008)

The black metal connoiseur is a seeker of fine, exotic tastes to thrill the loins and get dolled up to. However, sometimes this Farway-reaching search can lead us to overlook the ugly, raw nature of the day-to-day. In their debut demo, Frail brilliantly reveal the raw barbarity of everyday suburban life. Imagine, if you will, the pure depressive reality of working the same retail job for the rest of your life, with only Neige to comfort your mind in its dark doldrums; the nagging howls of your flatmates, filled with confused vitriol, echoing indiscernably across the house at you to do your dishes; the guitar that lets you express all of your emotional turmoil, but ultimately only mocks you because you never have enough time or money to take lessons and learn sweet new riffs; the futile frustration of fighting with notepad's ungainly scrollbar. Can there be more depressing topics to embody with your music?

I have to admit, I do enjoy parts of this. There is a general tone to it that is quite pleasant; a nice emulation of the post-black metal poster boys. It even starts to grow on you when allowed to slide into background territory. But, in the end, it's just a lackluster release - blandly repetitive, stale, and devoid of emotion. Perhaps I dislike this so much because I feel that there is quite the potential lying dormant here. You obviously owe yourself better than this. Thankfully it's just the first demo, so I hope to see more in the future.

Verdict: F(r)ail [4/10]
