The Drift - Memory Drawings (2008)

Post-rock - the next nu jazz territory? That certainly seems to be the case for The Drift. Mellow trumpet sings out over laid-back post-rock instrumentals, sort of like an analog take on Toshinori Kondo, but without the trumpet virtuosity. It's all rather pleasant and devoid of typical post-rock formulas. Easy listening, if you will.

This isn't a bad record by any means, but that doesn't mean it's a great one. The songs are all too similar to each other, blurring in their lack of highlights or variety to an indiscernible whole. Those with more trumpet presence are indisputably the best, but the meandering free jazz jam style still doesn't help any of the songs linger once they're over. The drums need some work to boot. While they seem to be going for a laconic, lazy-day feel, they end up halfway in between - far too busy for minimalism and uninspiringly slow for energy. I guess that sort of describes the songs in general. They don't really have a statement to make, and they're not particularly suited to one mood or another.

Verdict: Indifference [3/5] (I think you're onto something)
