Purulent Jacuzzi - Stench of the Drowned Carrion (2008)
This was a difficult one, because I had to actually stop laughing at the band's name for a few moments to write this review. This is a debut from Purulent Jacuzzi, a Russian goregrind outfit playing in a simple but often groovy style.
The mix is pretty crisp, the guitars have a nice fuzz on the distortion, the vocals of M1asmatic are suitably brutal, and the majority of the tracks feel like a blunt object to the back of the cranium. Though they are using the simple riffing so dominant in this sub-genre, they do enough to keep it fun. "Your Mangled Body" is an example, starts off with a common slower grind riff then has a pretty neat little palm mute death metal riff. "Postoperative Bleeding" is another one, hits like a ton of bricks but has a cute little death riff. It's just enough to make you look forward to the tracks, which is more than I can say for a lot of bands in this style. "Osteoclasioma" is another of my favorites here.
Of course, there are the song titles. I was surprised that Purulent Jacuzzi's tracks aren't generally as witty as their band name, but there are at least a few: "Enteric Fluids are Dissolving in the Tap Water", "Suturing the Self Masticated Tongue", "Decomposing Gastric Follicles". Definitely the disgusting medical gore influence of early Carcass here.
Stench of the Drowned Carrion is 29 tracks and I had fun with it. I'd almost say the band name alone is worth throwing your money at these guys.
Verdict: Win (7/10)
