The '6 years always have so much to offer, so it's not a surprise to me that, like '86 and '96 before it, 2006 had some real scorchers. The Summoning album was my favorite, a beautiful overture to its subject material, like most of their albums. My favorite Mastodon, Blood Mountain, was not far behind, another perfect score and a fascinating hybrid of hardcore and metal with progressive elements. But then the quality remains quite high deep into the list. Black metal dominates, with European groups like Drudkh, Negură Bunget and Forest Silence hitting their peaks. It was also great to see bands like Tankard and Voivod show up with their best albums in many years.
