All told, 2005 was a surprisingly strong year for metal, even if it would be surpassed by the next few. The top two choices are both mind melting masterpieces of excellence for their respective genres, and the immense quality runs pretty deep into the list. It was great to see Kreator rise to the occasion once more, and as with many of the years in the 'oughts, there is quite a versatile mix of genres here with a lot of new faces showing up. Total 70s Sabbath worship via Witchcraft, some great folk/black with Klabautamann just to name a few. Mörk Gryning left us on a high note, with their most diverse record blending black, death and thrash. Some other killer black metal here from Taake and Ondskapt. I had begun to play metal again (locally) about this time, so I was paying attention to the underground more, though perhaps not as much as I have obviously in recent years with the blog.
