Neuropathia - Neuropathia (2009)

For their 5th full-length album, veteran Polish grinders Neuropathia offer just under 30 minutes of dense, left-of-center aggression. Following in the footsteps of albums like Bubba Luciferi and Satan Owns Your Stereo, you know this is a band that can take themselves lightly, and that would seem to be the case here.

"Cotton Devil" starts with a kicking beat and thick, bone jarring guitar work, but it's an instrumental with a nice little ascending, distorted bass line. "Scraggly Tailed Dog" is the first vocal track, and Konrad has pipes enough to please any fan of grind and death vocals. The riffs alternate between furious punk core and more surgical deathgrind to great effect. "Hairdresser from Chicago" is a streetcore anthem that breaks into a blistering, precision blitzkrieg that will have Nasum and Rotten Sound fans flopping about for air. "Dead Guy in the Tent", "Spoon Smashed Face", and "Dude" will all cater to your need for speed, while the album takes a turn for the slower, sludgier and more atmosphere with "Journey Through the Wastelands" (the album also includes an industrial/noise remix of this track). One thing I could have lived without is the band's cover of E.M.F.'s "Unbelievable", which was shite to begin with and fares no better in grind form.

Neuropathia is all about those thick, syrupy guitar tones that a lot of Eurogrinders output. The album sounds like an unending circle pit erupting at about 75mph, with only a few breaks for water and cigars. The band's quirky sense of humor adds to their flair, and there are worse ways to kill a half hour. It's a good enough grind album if you're into that sort of thing.

Verdict: Win [7/10]
