Abhordium - Declaration of Perdition EP (2009)

Abhordium are a Finnish death metal act with one of the more unusual and original styles I've heard since...Demilich. Essentially the band creates a panicked, chaotic whirlwind of crunchy guitars and an occasional touch of brooding experimentation. Declaration of Perdition is their debut and should spin a few heads, though perhaps more for the inherent potential of the band than the individual quality of the songs on the EP.

"Sepulchral Prolepsis" is a twisted, grinding mess of rolling drum battery and waves of chunky riffs and guttural throwdown vocals. The composition is very earthen and interesting, like a landslide of rocks of varying volumes crashing down upon you. "Thus You Are Nil" creates paranoia through its alternating chugs and bursts of infectious death, with a grindy break that transforms into...something else entirely just before the 2 minute mark (dementia summoned forth from sliding strings?) "Cacotopian Breed" opens with a truly 'what the fuck' moment before it staggers into some semblance of death metal normality. "Scapegoats" has some of the better riffs on the album, acrobatic but brutal and old school, with some interesting breakdowns involving...a gong?! Insane. "Back to the Primal Chaos" is another rager with some bouncing, thrusting riffs that feel like a multiple stabbing, and a fine melodic climax.

The boxy tones of Declaration of Perdition could not fit the compositions better, especially the contrast between the slower chugging guitars and the sprite, speeding rhythms. The drums and vocals are great, and the band is one of the more adventurous death metal outfits to emerge lately. I didn't find all the songs here memorable, but I admire the band's bizarre energy, which is rarely found outside the crazy bands of the 90s (Demilich, Disharmonic Orchestra, Fudge Tunnel, etc). Looking forward to whatever they conceive next.

Verdict: Win [7/10]
