Nox Inferi - Adverse Spheres (2008)

Starring one of the blokes behind Aussie favourites Nazxul, Nox Inferi crawls in a space somewhere between atmospheric black metal and doom. Adverse Spheres is definitely not for the riff-addicted, as the instruments often blur together once they discover momentum, transmogrifying into a warm, voluminous fog. The drone that forms the brut of their sound is a fairly successful affair, almost reaching a dark ambient state of sound. As the album goes on, the drone gives way to funereal impulses, grounding itself with a ponderous tread. This brings in the recquisite basic funeral drum beat, but manages to stay interesting.

As far as the atmosphere goes, Adverse Spheres is lovely. The production is thick and embracing, albeit not as rich as it could be. The vocals fit perfectly, neither detracting from the miasma nor failing to lend emotion. But atmosphere is really all that this album has. While enjoyable, especially for a debut, there's nothing amazing or new about it. If you're looking for a solid entry to go in with your ambient black metal list, this will most likely suffice.

Verdict: Indifferent [3/5]
